Govilon Boat Club Autumn/Winter Newsletter 2024
Welcome to our first newsletter for a while.
There has been quite a few new members coming in, to which we say a very big welcome and also au revoir to those leaving. If any members have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to contact any of the committee, details can be found on the notice board within the boat club building. (Door Code 1472)
This year we have seen quite a lot of new work carried out, including the building of a new barbecue for all members use, a few new garden areas and the painting of some areas. A big thank you to Holding Trustee Les Nott for leading with this work and to all those members who volunteered their time to allow this to happen and please remember, we need members to volunteer their time to help with these things as this enables us to keep mooring fees as low as possible. We have also had CCTV fitted, adding extra security at the club.
The weather has not been kind for us this season but I do hope members have had an enjoyable season at the boat club.
We have had a 3 social events this year, for which I would like to thank Ruth Kedward and all those involved in organising and ensuring all ran smoothly. However, apart from the first one, attendance has been quite low and the committee are obviously wondering why. We would like to know what members liked, what they didn’t like about the events offered, and suggestions for next year. Also, we need more volunteers to help with social events, including cooking. If you feel you can offer your time to help with events and ideas for next year, then please get in touch with any member of the committee or place your suggestions in the suggestion box within the clubhouse.
We had a great turnout of 7 boats from the Boat Club, for the annual
B46 to 5 locks Canal Group Summer Carnival Flotilla, with Jane and Alan Withey for the second year running, being placed for the best presented boat, along with Phil and Rachel Jones and family, who came third in the best presented crew competition. Two member’s boats were featured in the October Wilderness News, our own Cwtsh Bach and Heulwen owned by Alan and Jane Withey. Also, Ruth and Mark Kedward are pictured as part of the Keith Hadden Memorial Cruise. The cruise took place on the East Anglian waterways and Ann and Jon Mudd also trailed their Wilderness boat to take part.
Now that winter is approaching, it is important to think about taking care of your boat during bad weather. Please ensure that mooring ropes are secure, but also a little looser in case water levels drop. Also please ensure that there is nothing left unsecured on the top or around your boat that could blow off in high winds. The Harbourmaster, Emlyn, will check on boats regularly over the winter months, but the overriding responsibility for safety of boats lies with members.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope to see you all at the AGM in February (Date to be announced).
